Kangan Institute ‘Project Runway’
Do you live and breathe fashion?

This fashion competition gives you the exciting opportunity to have your original garment design created and showcased at our Kangan Institute fashion show in November 2024.

You’ll see your sketched design fully transformed and made runway-ready while gaining invaluable experience in fashion alongside Kangan Institute’s fashion industry professionals.

All entrants will receive two (2) free tickets to the ‘Enchanted’ runway show (if under 18, must be accompanied by a parent or guardian).
Prizes:

Three (3) winning students will:

  • Have your design sketches turned into garments for you to keep
  • Have your garments showcased in Kangan Institute’s ‘Enchanted’ runway show in November 2024
  • Receive two (2) free tickets to the ‘Enchanted’ runway show (if under 18, must be accompanied by guardian)
  • Undertake a design workshop with Kangan Institute’s fashion educators
  • Undertake a garment production workshop with Kangan Institute’s fashion educators
What you need to do:

Inspired by the theme ‘ENCHANTED’ design your original vision. Creative, experimental and innovative designs are encouraged –the winning designs should have runway appeal and ‘wow factor’.

Design ONE (1) of the following: 

  • A showstopping look for people aged 16 and over, while considering the use of recycled materials and pre-loved fashion
  • A red-carpet worthy gown or cocktail dress 
       OR

  • A complete outfit (ie a combination of jacket, pants, top or skirt)
Consider designing for categories such as:

  • Eveningwear / Cocktail
  • Racewear
  • Sportswear
  • Fantasy / Theatrical / Avant Garde

Entries will be judged by Kangan Institute’s fashion educators, based on the following criteria:
How to enter:

Step 1:
Prepare a Design Concept submission which must include:

  • Written Paragraph of 200 words or less that covers:
  • Your inspiration for the design
  • Description of the colour palette and fabrics, any attachments and other necessary techniques (e.g. print, dying, bleaching, hand painting etc.)
  • Storyboard Artwork that includes:
  • 1 x A4 page Inspiration/Mood board – A selection of inspirational images (these might be clothing images and/or conceptual images).
  • 1 x A4 page Fashion Designs – sketched in colour on figure templates by hand or using a computer program or app.
  • Intended fabric colours and textures
Note: hand-drawn sketches need to be scanned. Sketches may be drawn on the template provided or on templates of your own;

  • 1 x A4 page Digital Swatches of proposed fabrics, including any special trims or special effects such as embroidery, print, hand painting, bleaching, beading etc.
  • Bibliography: Include references such as links for where you have sourced information.
Step 2: 
Enter your contact details in the Entry Form below and upload your Design Concept files from Step 1.

For applicants under 18 you must also upload a completed consent form signed by a parent or guardian. Download here.

Entries and Design Concepts, as well as consent form if applicable, must be submitted by 6pm on Monday 16 September 2024.

Step 3: 
Three (3) winning entrants will be selected.

Successful applicants must be available for workshops at Kangan Institute’s Cremorne campus from 10am–4pm on Tuesday 24 September and Wednesday 25 September 2024, where they will refine and produce their winning designs.

The winners will have their garments shown on the runway at the ‘Enchanted’ fashion show on Tuesday 19 November 2024, and will receive two (2) tickets to attend the show.

Conditions of Entry

  • Open to high school students in years 10, 11 and 12 who are enrolled into a secondary high school, or VCE Major program
  • Applicants must be aged 16 years or older
  • Must be available to attend the two Project Runway days on 24–25 September 2024 at Kangan Institute Cremorne campus
  • Must complete all areas of the application
  • Parental consent must be provided for all applicants under 18
  • Winners under 18 must be accompanied by a guardian to the ‘Enchanted’ fashion show
